Black Out the Sun

The Holy Day of Black Out the Sun is tomorrow. To most others this day is is the summer solstice. Black Out the Sun is the day where adherents to Nerull spend the entire solstice spilling sacrificial blood on an effigy of the sun. Thus blacking-out the sun with blood.

You have been commanded to gather as many people alive for sacrifice the next day. You start your efforts after sun down the day before. You must return before midnight. You only have open opportunity to go out and come back.

Please detail your plans below.

Ish’s Paladin, Jason’s Bard, and Jen’s Theif are planning to spend our time in the poor quarters with our high CHA and Bluff/Intimidate/Diplomacy/Perform/Knowledge skills, to convince them to follow us to a grand celebration around the temple.

Black Out the Sun

We will try to gather people who aren’t in a group or have noticeable connections to other people – homeless, derelicts, orphans, drunks, etc – so nobody will notice they’re missing. The celebration will be around a less guarded area close to one of the tunnels to the temple. From there, the other characters will use their skills/spells/summons to scare and herd the people into the tunnel toward the temple. We’ll attempt to knock out, incapacitate, or (as a very last resort) kill non-cooperators who refuse to run into the tunnel so they don’t alert guards. With the last few minutes we’ll try to carry/drag as many incapacitated people into the temple as possible.

Black Out the Sun

We would try to keep the number of people reasonable for the party, so we don’t get overwhelmed.

Black Out the Sun

How many hours will you spend spreading the word? What will you be providing at the celebration? What kind of place (business/open space) will you be holding the event?

Black Out the Sun

We’ll spend 2 hours spreading the word. Aiming to talk to about 100 people, so we’ll try to get 60-70 who show up to the party. With 5 high-CHA characters spreading the word, that’s around 10 people per character per hour.

The celebration will be staged at an abandoned warehouse picked out beforehand to be in a less-populated area.

We’ll provide middle-shelf beer and wine drugged so they fall into deep sleep. Then we’ll bind them with ropes in case one wakes up we can notice and act accordingly before they run off. We’ll use carts to drag people using Ish’s horse, Dave S’s horse, Ish’s Orc, me transformed into a horse (or a pony, since that’s medium), and summoning a few horses (not on the nature’s ally list, but druids can summon other large animals at that level). If the pony or summoned horses won’t fly, we will try to rent horses, or go without (and reduce the target number of people accordingly).

We’ll also bribe a few cart runners to perform taxi service just before midnight and try to get them inside to add to the number of sacrifices. Or tell them to go away if we have too many to carry in the first place.

Black Out the Sun

With a high enough ability to convince/bribe with alcohol we probably don’t need to have them follow us to the party but instead tell them where to go for the celebration where our lower charisma characters can already be “celebrating”. We can make use of sense motive to see whether someone is likely to go there or not.

Black Out the Sun

Regarding the warehouse: it’s a warren of rooms and old crates and rotting goods. How much time will you spend cleaning up and exploring?

Black Out the Sun

Regarding soliciting: what is the exact pitch – word for word?

Black Out the Sun

Regarding horses: how will you get summoned or purchased horses into the sewers? Sounds impossible.

Black Out the Sun

In regards to horses: For the paladins our summoned horses should be summonable in there, and assuming the cart fits those two horses shouldn’t be an issue.

Black Out the Sun

Agreed on the paladin’s mount and Jason turning into a pony (an evil pretty pony). Dire Rats will require Handle Animal check to “Push” an animal DC 25. Harnessing will be a Profession (teamster) roll.

Black Out the Sun

Regarding the horses, we’re going to go with 4 pullers: Ish & Dave Paladin Mount, Ish Orc, Jason Pony. Reduce the desired number of victims to 36.

Regarding the warehouse, whoever is not scouting can help clean one of the larger rooms at the same time. We’ll spend 2 hours scouting so that should leave us a good amount of time to make room for 50 people or so. The junk can be stored in one or more other rooms, so we don’t need to hide it from people, then barricade it so snoopers can’t readily see it.

Regarding the soliciting, “Hey friend! Would you like to join us for solstice celebration? We know these are trying times and it’s hard to find people to celebrate with, so we’re supplying free food and spirits for the less fortunate.”

We’ll use the buddy system while convincing people: two per group, three groups. We’ll aim to convince 12 people per group over the two hours (about ten minutes per victim).

Black Out the Sun

Ok please give me the 3 buddy teams and the clean up team.

When would the carts be unassembled and re-assembled in the sewer? The temple does not typically keep such things around.

Black Out the Sun

The teams are as follows:
DaveS Paladin & Jason Bard
Ish Paladin & DaveG Cleric
Jen Cleric & Jen Rogue

You mentioned a non-sewer entrance to the temple. Could we bring the carts through that entrance and through the sewers during the day when there’s fewer guards in the graveyard? Or is that entrance not big enough for the carts either?

Black Out the Sun

So you will all be cleaning/barricading and reassembling the carts? Can I have those team break downs as well?

The entrance in the city of the dead would typically be inside a crypt and probably not all that large either.

Black Out the Sun

I would think the best bet is our sneaky characters would transport the cart parts into the crypt/temple, then we would have the remainder of the cart team reassemble. So Jason Bard, Jen Rogue on the cart team. After that, breaking the groups up evenly and arbitrarily might be good enough.

Black Out the Sun

Main characters will be in the warehouse. No flunkies until you are ready to start spreading the news of the fine event.

So far I have the main PC’s cleaning an area for the party and barricading exits. Is that the extent of the plan for the warehouse?

Black Out the Sun

That sounds good to me. Maybe try to set up some of the sturdier debris as tables/characteristics f possible. They’ll set up the food and wine while the others are out spreading the word.

Black Out the Sun

That’s supposed to be tables and chairs.

Black Out the Sun

After clearing the warehouse out of vermin, you start moving garbage and crates around to create a space of 60 ft x 55 ft. You have opted to use some crates as tables.
